Birds from the EU

Birds are considered either "poultry", "pets" or "other birds" (in some special cases the condition to import circus animals or on trade between "approved centers" apply)

Conservation of species:

Most species are considered "non-domesticated". The import of those birds rare  - as all "CITES-species" - subject to the import conditions arising from the Swiss laws on conservation of species, see left on this page at the chapter "Wild flora and fauna / CITES", or directly at following link (in German):

Animal helath requirements

Poultry (including day-old chickens and hatching eggs)

The conditions to import "poultry" in any case apply for importing fowl, turkeys, guinea fowl, ducks, geese, quails, pheasants, partridges, ostriches and other ratites (Ratitae) -  as well as for pigeons reared or kept in captivity for the production of meat.
Please note that there are slightly less restrictive conditions and a specific certificate for consignments of less than 20 poultry birds, hatching eggs and chickens:

Birds of other species (than poultry)

a) the conditions to import "pets" apply for "birds of other species" (than poultry) travelling with their owners, specific criteria see at the page "importing pets":

b) the conditions for "other birds from the EU" apply to import "birds of other species" (than poultry) not deemed "pets" - specially for commercial imports:

c) [separate conditions apply to import circus animals and on trade between "approved centers" (e.g. some zoos), see the corresponding chapters left on this page]
