Imports of live animals from the EU

In principle, the same veterinary conditions apply for importing live animals from the EU as apply for intra-community trade within the EU. The import regulations for live animals from the EU also apply for animals that have previously been imported into the EU in accordance with the applicable “third country regulations”

For many animal species, standard import regulations exist which are described in the relevant sub-chapter on the species in question. Please choose the relevant category in the navigation on the left side of this page. If these standard conditions can be met no animal health import permit from the FVO is necessary. More ..

TRACES
Commercial imports must be dealt with the TRACES. This european veterinary information system provides informations for the veterinarian authorities regarding the traffic across borders of live animals, foodstuffs and animal by-products. Switzerland is fully integrated into the system.

Exceptions
If there are no standard conditions for a given species or if these cannot be met, then contact  the Federal Veterinary Office (FVO) before the import.

Exceptions can be granted only in a few cases, e.g. if dogs or cats can not be vaccinated for medical reasons or for puppies between 3 and 4 months old who must be transferred before the end of the necessary waiting period.

Conservation of species
If both types of permits (based on provisions of animal health and conservation of species laws) are needed for a particular import the formalities are coordinated within the FVO. The application form for a permit that would be necessary based on the laws on conservation is available (in German or French) on the page "Wild Fauna and Flora / CITES", or directly by the link  (in German, also available in French):
