Bones - horns - hooves - products thereof, excluding meal

This page shows samples of the veterinary certificates required for import and transit and (where available) the lists of recognised countries of origin and approved suppliers.

They are applicable subject to the import bans effective on the day of import, temporary restrictions and special conditions (see links).

Bones, horns, hooves and products thereof (excluding meal) for purposes other than their use as feed material, organic fertiliser or soil improver must conform to the requirements as set forth in Annex XIV Chapter II Section 7 of Regulation (EU) 142/2011 (see links). 

Horns and hooves and products thereof (excluding meal) for the manufacture of organic fertiliser or soil improver must conform to the requirements as set forth in Annex XIII Chapter XII and Annex XIV Chapter II Section 12 of Regulation (EU) 142/2011.

Approved countries of origin

According to Annex XIV Chapter II Section 1 Table 2 of Regulation (EU) 142/2011 these products may be imported into Switzerland from any country.

Approved supplying establishments in third countries

Lists of suppliers in third countries must be included in the TRACES system according to the technical specifications published by the Commission on its website. The veterinary authorities of the approved country of origin are responsible for permitting goods for export only from suppliers that meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1069/2009 and Regulation (EU) 142/2011.
Decision 2007/453/EC lists the BSE status of third countries or regions thereof. The list was last amended and replaced by

Model of required veterinary certificate

For bones, horns, hooves and products thereof (excluding meal) for uses other than as feed material, organic fertiliser or soil improver, the following documents are needed:

a) a commercial document as stipulated in Annex XIV Chapter II Section 7 Number 2 of Regulation (EU) 142/2011, and

b) a declaration from the importer as stipulated in Annex XIV Chapter 16 of Regulation (EU) 142/2011, which has to be provided in at least one official language of the importing country and country of destination:

  • "For bones and bone products (excluding bone meal), horns and horn products (excluding horn meal) and hooves and hoof products (excluding hoof meal) intended for use other than as feed material, organic fertilisers or soil improvers": from page 235

For horns and hooves and products thereof (excluding meal) intended for the production of organic fertiliser or soil improver, the template of the veterinary certificate for import and transit (Annex XV Chapter 18) can be found in Regulation (EU) 142/2011:
