The aims of the Federal Veterinary Office (FVO) in the field of animal health are to control and monitor diseases which pose a risk to livestock, can be transmitted to humans, have serious economic consequences or compromise international trade.

Prevention and control of animal diseases, along with the monitoring of their incidence, are of crucial importance to the health of animals.
In addition to the classical control measures, which focus on the risk of a disease and the options available for combating the disease, the voluntary efforts of animal keepers also contribute to animal health. The animal health services (see link) are therefore supported by the federal government and the cantons.
