Dogs, cats, ferrets from the EU (pets)

Pets are animals which are kept out of interest in the animals or as household companions. They accompany their owners or persons acting on behalf of the owners. Pets are not to be sold or passed on to new owners.

Essentials at a glance

1. Protection against rabies
Have your animal vaccinated at least 21 days before entering Switzerland. If a booster vaccination has been given within the validity period of the first vaccination, the waiting period does not apply.

2. Identification
Your animal must be identified - with a microchip or a tattoo (only valid when tattooed before 03.07.2011). Swiss dogs must also be registered in the ANIS database. Anyone who definitively imports a dog into Switzerland from abroad must have it registered in the ANIS database by a veterinarian within 10 days.

3. Pet ID
The animals must be accompanied by a correctly completed pet ID.

4. Dogs and cats younger than 3 months:
Veterinary certificate, stating that the young animals were kept since birth at their birthplace without contact with wild animals. The certificate is not necessary, when the young animals are accompanied by their mother, from which they are still dependent. Cubs younger than 56 days can only be brought over the border, when they are accompanied by their mother or their foster-mother.

5. Unlimited number of animals
Coming from EU countries an unlimited number of pets may be brought into Switzerland.

6. No dogs with docked ears and/or tails

Exceptions

If there are no standard conditions for a given species or if these cannot be met, then contact  the Federal Veterinary Office (FVO) before the import.
Exceptions can be granted only in a few cases, e.g. if dogs or cats can not be vaccinated for medical reasons or for puppies between 3 and 4 months old who must be transferred before the end of the necessary waiting period.
