More detailed information concerning definitions of different categories and requirements applicable for consignments of by-products to be sent to the EU are available in the regulations (EC) 1069/2009 and 142/2011, see also "animal by-products" right on this screen. The Swiss regulations on animal by-products can be found on the German, French and Italian versions of this page.

Commercial document or certificates for export to the EU

Only a commercial document (in prescribed format) is normally required for exports of animal by-products of category 3 to the EU. However, for by-products or derived products of categories 1 or 2 and for processed animal protein ("meals", even those of categoy 3), consignments must be notified via TRACES and an import license of the member state of destination is mandatory, as foresseen in art. 48 of regulation EC 1069/2009.

Besides, France still requires BSE-guarantees for certain by-products, for details see German or French version of this page.
