Foods of animal origin have to be hygienically flawless, must pose no health risk and must be as free from additives and impurities as possible.
The Federal Veterinary Office FVO supports the cantonal authorities in the field of abattoir and dairy hygiene and enforces the law on foodstuffs in the import, transit and export of meat and meat products through the border veterinarian service. The office supports scientific research, e.g. in the field of diseases that can be transmitted via foodstuffs from animals to humans (zoonoses).
Foodstuffs are, on the one hand, sources of nutrition which serve to develop and maintain the human body and, on the other, "recreational" beverages and foods which, when enjoyed in moderation, can enhance the quality of life.
The quality of the raw materials, in other words of the animals, plants, minerals and drinking water, must - if they are used for the manufacture of foodstuffs or as food - be such that the foods obtained from them do not pose a hazard to human health.
