Animal experiments

Every year around 700,000 animals are used in animal experiments in Switzerland. At the beginning of the 80s the figure stood at 2 million. The decline is a consequence of animal welfare legislation: in Switzerland experiments may only be carried out in animals if they are absolutely necessary.

Every single animal experiment must be justified and approved in Switzerland. The approval procedure involves various bodies operating in a system of mutual controls. An important role is played by animal experiment committees, on which animal welfare organizations also have a seat. The elaborate procedure has one objective: to protect animals from unjustified stresses as well as possible.
